Zero-Based Budgeting
A budgeting method where every dollar of income is assigned a job — spending, saving or debt — until nothing is left unallocated.
In zero-based budgeting, income minus allocations equals zero. Every dollar that arrives is deliberately assigned: rent, groceries, savings, debt repayment, fun. Nothing sits around unlabelled, which is the point — unlabelled money leaks.
It is powerful and it is work. Apps like YNAB built a movement on it. The honest trade-off: the method demands regular hands-on allocation, which suits some temperaments and exhausts others. The alternative is automating the subtraction — which is what safe-to-spend approaches do.
