Your safety net, sized honestly.

Three to six months of essentials is the target everyone quotes — but at your numbers, what does that actually mean? Work it out from your real essential spending, and see how long it takes at a pace you can keep.

Rent or mortgage, groceries, power, transport, insurance — the must-pays only

How many months of cover?

Three months is a strong first target; six suits variable income or a single-income household.

Whatever is honest — $20 a week builds real cover faster than you'd think

Your emergency fund target

Enter your essential weekly spending to see your target.

The first $1,000 matters most — it keeps a blown tyre off the credit card. A savings goal in Owdyn ring-fences the fund and builds the contribution into your Safe to Spend.

Good questions. Clear answers.

How much emergency fund do I actually need?

The classic target is three to six months of essential expenses — rent, groceries, power, transport, insurance. Three months suits stable salaried income; six suits variable income, contracting, or a single-income household. The first $1,000 matters most either way.

Where should an emergency fund live?

Somewhere reachable within a day or two but separate from everyday spending — an on-call savings account works well. Term deposits lock money away too firmly for emergencies; investments can be down exactly when you need them.

Emergency fund or pay off debt first?

A starter buffer first — around $500 to $1,000 — so a surprise doesn’t land on the credit card. Then attack high-interest debt hard, then build the fund out to the full 3–6 months. It’s a sequence, not a choice.

What counts as an emergency?

Job loss, urgent car or dental repairs, emergency travel — things that are unexpected, necessary and urgent. Christmas is not an emergency; it is a sinking fund (it happens every year, on schedule).

One calculation is a snapshot. Owdyn keeps it live.
