Still committed to BNPL

BNPL instalments are interest-free, but missed payments attract late fees — and every active plan is committed spending until it clears. Owdyn subtracts upcoming instalments from your Safe to Spend automatically.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Is BNPL debt?

Yes — friendly-looking debt. Buy now, pay later means you owe the remaining instalments, and from December 2025 BNPL providers in NZ fall under the CCCFA’s lending rules. It is interest-free when paid on time, but every active plan is committed money until it clears.

Why does the total matter if each instalment is small?

Because plans stack. Three plans at $30 a fortnight is $90 of every pay already spoken for — and your bank balance shows none of it. The total committed figure is the honest size of the obligation.

What happens if I miss a BNPL payment?

Late fees apply — typically $8–$10 per missed instalment depending on the provider, sometimes capped per plan. Missed payments can also freeze your account and, with some providers, affect your credit record.

How does Owdyn track BNPL?

Afterpay, Laybuy and Zip plans are first-class citizens in Owdyn: enter a plan once and every upcoming instalment is automatically subtracted from your Safe to Spend, so the number you see is genuinely spendable.

One calculation is a snapshot. Owdyn keeps it live.

Import your transactions and Owdyn runs the numbers continuously — bills, BNPL and goals already subtracted from one honest Safe-to-Spend figure. Free during beta.
