How to import your first bank statement CSV

After this guide, you'll be able to: Import 2–3 months of transactions from any NZ bank using a CSV export.

Published 21 April 2026

  1. 1

Export a CSV from your bank's online banking

Log in to your online banking. Look for a "Statements", "Transaction history", or "Export" option. Select a date range of 2–3 months and choose CSV as the export format.

If you're not sure where to find it: ANZ — go to Statements and choose Export. ASB — Account History → Download. BNZ — Statement Enquiry → Export. Kiwibank — Download Statement. Westpac — Transaction History → Export to CSV.

Download one file per account. If you have multiple accounts at the same bank, run a separate export for each.

  2. 2

Open the CSV Import wizard in Owdyn

In Owdyn, go to Accounts, open the account you want to import into, and tap "Import transactions" (or find Import in the account's action menu). The CSV Import wizard opens.

  3. 3

    Upload your CSV file

Drag and drop the file onto the upload area, or click to browse for it. Owdyn reads the file and shows you a preview of the first few rows.

  4. 4

    Map the columns

The wizard asks you to confirm which column is the date, which is the description/merchant name, and which is the amount. For most NZ bank exports, Owdyn detects the mapping automatically. If it guesses wrong, use the dropdowns to correct it.

Owdyn also asks you to confirm the date format (e.g. DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD). Check the preview rows to verify it's reading your dates correctly.

  5. 5

    Review and confirm

You'll see a summary: how many rows were found, how many are new, and how many are flagged as likely duplicates. Review any duplicates before confirming — most are safe to skip.

Tap "Confirm import" to load all new transactions into your account.

If the duplicate detection flags too many rows, you can review each one individually and choose to import or skip it.

What happens next

Your transactions are now in Owdyn. The next step is to review how they've been categorised — most will be auto-assigned, but a few will need your input.
