IRD Number
Your personal tax identifier in New Zealand — needed for work, bank accounts, KiwiSaver and property transactions.
An IRD number is the eight-or-nine-digit identifier Inland Revenue uses to track your tax. You need one to start a job (or face emergency tax rates), open interest-bearing accounts at the right RWT rate, join KiwiSaver, and buy or sell property.
It is yours for life — one per person, never reissued. Keep it as private as any other identity number; it is a key to your tax records.
