Honest comparison
Owdyn vs YNAB
YNAB (You Need A Budget) is a US budgeting app famous for zero-based "give every dollar a job" envelope budgeting and a devoted community.
Facts last checked: 29 July 2026
At a glance
YNAB’s method is excellent and its community is real. But for New Zealanders it has two structural problems: no NZ bank feeds (file imports only) and USD pricing with no free plan. Owdyn gives you the local version of the same clarity — NZD-first, NZ banks, BNPL built in, free to start.
Side by side
| Owdyn | YNAB | |
|---|---|---|

| Built for NZ | Yes — NZD-first, NZ merchants, NZ date formats | No — US-centric; no NZ bank connections |
| Getting your data in | CSV import from any NZ bank — no bank login required. Automatic bank sync is in testing and comes to Plus and Wise after launch. | File-based import for NZ banks (no direct feeds); manual entry encouraged |
| Method | Safe to Spend — commitments subtracted for you, one honest number | Zero-based envelope budgeting — powerful, but you allocate every dollar yourself |
| BNPL (Afterpay, Laybuy, Zip) | Afterpay, Laybuy and Zip tracking built in | No built-in BNPL concept |
| Free tier | Unlimited accounts and transactions, CSV import and export, budgets, goals, bills, BNPL and Debt Cockpit — free, no card | No free plan — subscription only after trial |
| Pricing | NZD pricing; free plan always free | Charged in USD — the exchange rate works against you |
Where YNAB shines
- The zero-based method genuinely changes habits for people who commit to it.
- Excellent education, workshops and a famously supportive community.
- Mature apps across every platform.
Where Owdyn shines
- Built for New Zealand: NZ banks via CSV today, NZD pricing, NZ merchant recognition.
- Safe to Spend does the allocation maths for you — bills, BNPL and goals are subtracted automatically instead of you assigning every dollar by hand.
- Free plan that is actually free, in NZD, forever.
- Afterpay, Laybuy and Zip tracked natively — a distinctly NZ/AU spending reality YNAB does not model.
Pick YNAB if you specifically want strict zero-based envelope budgeting, enjoy hands-on allocation, and don’t mind USD billing and file-based imports.
Pick Owdyn if you want YNAB-grade clarity without the ceremony — local banks, local currency, BNPL handled, and a number you can trust at a glance.
Good questions. Clear answers.
Does YNAB work with New Zealand banks?
Not directly — YNAB has no NZ bank feeds, so New Zealanders import files or enter transactions manually. Owdyn is NZ-first: CSV import works with every NZ bank today, and automatic sync is in testing for Plus and Wise plans.
Is there a free YNAB alternative in NZ?
Owdyn Free includes unlimited accounts and transactions, CSV import and export, budgets, goals, bills, BNPL tracking and the Debt Cockpit — free in NZD, no credit card. YNAB has no free plan.
Is Safe to Spend the same as zero-based budgeting?
They aim at the same feeling — knowing every dollar is accounted for — but differ in effort. Zero-based budgeting has you assign every dollar to an envelope yourself. Safe to Spend subtracts your bills, BNPL instalments, budgets and goal contributions automatically and shows you what is genuinely left.
